Making its modern operating system a successful product is one of Microsoft’s biggest challenges these days and Redmond knows it very well.

It turns out, however, that some of Microsoft’s efforts are paying off, as Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have a combined market share of 10.49 percent, enough to become the third top operating system in the world.

Statistics provided by market researcher Net Applications for the month of December 2013 show that Windows 7 continues to top the charts with 47.52 percent, while Windows XP dropped to 28.98 percent. Windows 8 is third with 6.89 percent, while Windows 8.1 comes right after Windows Vista with 3.60 percent.

This is clearly good news for Microsoft, as the software giant is reportedly planning to launch a major update for the new operating system in just a few months, most likely in April at the BUILD developer conference.
