Rumors on a Microsoft smartwatch have been swirling around for months, but now it appears that the project has received the green light and several prototypes have already been developed.

AmongTech claims that smartwatches equipped with 1.5-inch screens are already being tested by multiple company employees, so a 2014 release date is very likely.

The same source reports that wrist bands will be available in several colors, including blue, red, yellow, black, white, and gray, and will be completely removable to be replaced on the go.

The smartwatch will feature what is being called Oxynitride Aluminium, a new type of aluminium that’s no less than 80 percent transparency, but 4 times harder than glass.

A new version of Windows 8 will power the device, which will also feature cloud-based storage, obviously provided by SkyDrive. 4G LTE will also be provided to access files stored in the cloud and even though no permanent connection to a smartphone will be required, it will be compatible with Windows Phones for push notifications and music playback options.
