Microsoft has been working on a non-Windows operating system for a while, but the company has actually managed to keep most details secret, even though several reports have reached the web lately, pointing to some of the features to be part of the project.

Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet writes that Midori has recently received the green light and is now part of the Unified Operating System group under Executive Vice President Terry Myerson, which means that Redmond has now started work to bring the project in the final development stage.

Midori will be a non-Windows operating system based on cloud services, which could be in an indication that it would actually be a service aimed at businesses and governments.

It appears that work on Midori started in 2008, with Microsoft planning to create some sort of compatibility between the new platform and Windows, even though it’s not yet clear how this is going to work.

Under Myerson’s guidance, Microsoft is expected to decide whether Midori has a place in its product lineup or not in early 2014, which means that more official information on the project should be provided in just a couple of months.
