In February, Microsoft officials announced the company was looking to make available a native Lync app for Android tablets as soon as this summer.

A little ahead of schedule, the time has arrived for Microsoft’s enterprise communication platform app to be rolled out to Android tablet users. So far only Android smartphone-owners enjoyed the perks of Lync.

Launched back in 2010, the Lync platform was the company’s unique vision to unify the ways in which people communicate in the work environment. The app already supports Windows Phone, iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows and now has been extended to Android tablets.

Basically, Lync was created to enable anybody in an organization to talk to anyone else – regardless of whether they are in or out of the organization per se.

As of this week the Lync app for Android tablets is available for download in the Google Play Stores and can support both smartphones and slates running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and beyond. Sadly, devices powered by the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip are left out of the party.

The rolling out of the Android tablet Lync app is part of Microsoft’s new strategy of branching out towards new platforms. A few months back, Redmond launched the native Office app for iPad tablets.
