Microsoft has just revealed a brand new proof of concept tech demo at CES 2012 called IllumiRoom, which transforms the living room of an Xbox 360 owner into a virtual world by using the Kinect and a regular projector.

The Kinect sensor for the Xbox 360 has allowed players to step into the virtual worlds of certain video games, but it seems that Microsoft now wants to take things a step further, as it's just revealed a special new technology called IllumiRoom.

Basically, the tech demo, which can be admired in the video above, uses a Kinect and a projector to augment the reality surrounding the television screen with different visualizations.

IllumiRoom captures the layout of the room with the Kinect and then projects extra footage to "change the appearance of the room, induce apparent motion, extend the field of view, and enable entirely new game experiences," according to Microsoft's website.

Check out the video above to see the technology in action.
