The Office copy available on the Surface tablet cannot be used at work

Microsoft announced back in September that all Surface buyers would get a free copy of Office 2013 specifically adjusted to work on Windows RT.

Although it’s free, it appears that the bundled apps available on the Surface cannot be used at work without first paying for a license.

Windows RT comes with just four built-in apps, namely Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, all of them part of Office Home & Student 2013 RT Preview.

This means that those who want to use the Office suite at work have no other option than to buy a license.

“Organizations who purchase commercial use rights or have a commercial license to Office 2013 suites can use Office Home & Student 2013 RT for commercial, nonprofit, or revenue-generating activities,” Microsoft said according to ComputerWorld.
