A few days ago, we told you ASUS and Lenovo are both gearing up to produce Chromebook models with exceptionally low price tags.

Both models will be taking advantage of Rockchip’s low-cost processors, which will understandably lower the overall rates of the upcoming machines.

ASUS’ upcoming Chromebook model is expected to hit retail with a $149 / €118 price tag, while Lenovo has a similar one in the pipeline, plus one arriving for $170 / €135 price.

These new Chromebooks models will naturally put more pressure on Microsoft which has recently been trying to provide decent Chrome OS laptop-alternative, by launching a slew of budget notebooks running Windows 8.1 with Bing out of the box.

It’s the case of the ASUS X205TA, a device coming with very similar specifications as any Chromebook currently selling on the market.

The notebook originally launched for $199/ €159, but interestingly the device is up for grabs from the Microsoft Store for just $179 / €142, which is almost on par with what Lenovo’s upcoming Chromebook is going to sell for.

The ASUS X205TA is an 11.6-inch notebook with 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, drawing power from an Intel Atom quad-core processor fitted with 2GB of RAM.

So in anticipation of the new lineup of ultra-cheap Chromebooks, Microsoft already came up with solutions to counter the advent of the fresh models.
