Barracuda Networks believes Microsoft has played a significant role

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced taking technical and legal action against the ZeroAccess botnet. While many have argued that the company’s action hasn’t had a great impact on the threat, Barracuda Networks says it might have led to a drop in the volume of spam.

Barracuda says that it has recorded a significant drop since the first week of September. Back then, there were close to 10,500 domains spotted in spam messages. Until December, the number dropped to just over 2,100 per week.

Experts say that Microsoft’s actions might not have been the only factor, but they apparently played “a significant role.”

On the other hand, the company says it has already started seeing increasing spam levels, which might be due to the botnet's revival, or because the holidays are coming and spammers are trying to take advantage.
