Staring with this weekend, Microsoft has on its site a security update for Service Pack 2. In this way, SP2 will include support for Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2), guarding the users from the specific dangers of the wireless technologies. The update is free and is already available for download and install.
By installing WPA2, the wireless software of a PC will be compatible with the IEEE 802.11i standard, which was specifically developed
for WiFi networks.
Microsoft announces that this software update adds support for WPS IE (wireless provisioning services information element). By activating the support, this standard allows internet wireless service providers to install safe access points.
With this update, the operating system will include support so that Internet service providers can operate in several logical wireless networks within only one physical infrastructure.
The support for the WiFi Alliance standard allows governmental agencies, medical service providers and companies dealing with the security services to install and operate wireless networks.
Jawad Khaki, corporate vice president at Windows Networking & Device Technologies within Microsoft, has declared that for continuing the development of wireless computing, small users, but also enterprises have to be assured that the shared information is safe when it's being accessed through these networks. Jawad says that this security update confirms Microsoft's determination to offer improved security conditions by including the latest available standards for wireless networks.
