Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson, suggests that the coming Xbox One home console from Microsoft might be capable of supporting mods as long as developers and publishers are interested in them.

Taking part in a Reddit discussion, the community manager stated, “It's up to developers to support that. These are two very different things.”

It’s unclear how gamers could upload mods for the Xbox One and how they might be distributed to the community built around a game.

On the PC, many video games from Civilization V to Skyrim benefit from impressive modding work, especially via Steam Workshop.

Microsoft is not currently supporting mods for the Xbox 360.

The announcement comes after the team at Microsoft has announced that its next-gen console will support self-publishing for indie games and will allow any user to develop their own games, if they want to.
