Redmond-based tech giant Microsoft keeps promoting its new Windows 8.1 operating system, this time showcasing what it calls “8.1 reasons to love” the refreshed software.

In a lengthy blog post that highlights some of the improvements it made to Windows 8.1, Microsoft also talks about the return of the Start button.

The company calls this particular feature “an old friend” that’s now back in Windows 8.1 and makes it easier for you to access your favorite features in the operating system.

“The return of an old friend. It's true. The Start button is back. When you're on the desktop, you can use it to get back to Start anytime,” it said.

The blog post then goes on to talk about some other Windows 8.1 features, including the Bing Smart Search, improved multi-tasking, the new Windows Store, more tile sizes, better touchscreen typing, automated online storage via SkyDrive, IE11, and a revamped lock screen.

“Your lock screen is now like a digital picture frame, as you can set it to show a slide show of your favorite photos. The Windows 8.1 lock screen also behaves more like your phone’s lock screen. You can immediately answer Skype calls and take photos without having to unlock your PC,” it noted.

As you know, Windows 8.1 is available right now as a free download for those who’ve already installed Windows 8. Simply launch the Windows Store and you’ll be prompted to deploy the new 8.1.

In case you’re now using an older version of Windows or a different operating system but you still want to make the move to Windows 8.1, Microsoft is also selling full licenses for $119.99 (€90) and $199.99 (€150) for the core and pro versions, respectively.

The retail packages are available either online, via Microsoft’s website, or at retailers across the world.
