Microsoft has already announced its plans to make the upcoming Windows 8.1 a bit more familiar, so the new operating system will pack several customization options aimed at the Start Screen.

It appears that the tech giant is planning to make the Start Screen act more like a Start Menu, allowing users to arrange icons by usage.

ZDNet.com writes that Microsoft is thus hoping that Windows 8.1 users won’t feel the need for a Start Screen, especially because the apps they access the most will be at a one-click distance.

In addition, the new Windows release might pack options to access the Start Screen in the All Apps view and see all installed applications, thus skipping the often criticized live tiles.

Last but not least, Microsoft is also believed to be working on options to let consumers use the desktop wallpaper as the Start Screen background to make the transition from the desktop to Metro easier.

No confirmation has been released yet, but more details will be provided in late June at the BUILD developer conference.
