Microsoft exec talks about the brand new Windows Store

Windows Store already has nearly 8,000 apps, so it remains one of the most important features available in the new Windows 8 operating system.

It’ll become generally available today after Microsoft unveils Windows 8 and people are still wondering whether the Store has enough apps to impress its first buyers.

But it’s not the number of apps that counts, says Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Windows Web Services Antoine Leblond.

In a short interview with Frederic Lardinois of TechCrunch, Leblond said that Microsoft is more focused on the quality of its apps than on the final count.

It’s very important to offer users good apps than to release 50 different tools that do the same thing, he explained. That’s also the reason why Microsoft isn’t bragging about the number of apps currently available in the Store, although unofficial reports suggest that it has nearly 8,000 entries.

Windows Store cannot be compared to Apple’s App Store because of a very simple reason, Leblond stated.

The former comes with trial versions of some software solutions, so developers aren’t required to roll out freeware builds of the same apps. This way, if users like an application, they buy it, without the need for any other special versions that, in the end, would also increase the app count.

Microsoft obviously expects the number of apps shipped through the Store to skyrocket in the next months, mostly because both Windows 8 and Windows RT will become available to a bigger number of developers.

At this point, there are only 2 apps available in the Store that run exclusively on Windows RT.
