Microsoft recently held an internal meeting to discuss the company’s sale performance with employees, with Steve Ballmer admitting that Windows 8’s isn’t selling well enough.

Now The Verge writes that Microsoft’s big honcho has also confirmed that the Surface RT didn’t attract as many buyers as he had expected, so the $900 million (€670 million) write-down to adjust inventories was absolutely needed.

"We built a few more devices than we could sell,” he was quoted as saying.

In the meantime, word is that Microsoft is preparing for the debut of the second-generation Surface tablet that’s said to include new hardware and more features.

In addition, the revamped product range is also believed to come with an 8-inch unit that would compete against the likes of iPad mini and Nexus 7.
