Truth is that when it comes to revolutions, Microsoft doesn't seem to be inspired or to go with the right trend. That is why every time the giant comes out of his operating system fortress, it always ends up looking like a perfect candidate for second place. Whether we are talking about Xbox which hasn't succeeded to outperform Playstation or Windows Mobile which is still behind Symbian, Microsoft wants to put together the pieces of the puzzle and to take a shot at digital music. Up until now, MSN employed the same system as iTunes to sell music, but lately, it seems that MSN officials have started to study the possibility to implement a subscription system similar to the one used by Napster, RealNetworks and Yahoo. After it has watched in silence as iPod set record after record, hoping that eventually it will break its neck, Microsoft has finally understood that only by combining products with services will the giant from Redmond be able to take a slice out of the music download pie. Hence, Microsoft will use Xbox 360, Windows Mobile 5.0 and the new Windows Media Player 11 Polaris to dethrone the uncrowned king of digital music. Considering that Apple has reached with its iTunes 430 million downloaded songs and a market share of 73%, it remains to be seen how much will Microsoft be willing to pay to catch up with the Cupertino company. Or who knows, maybe it will outrun Apple.
