Microsoft hopes to offer Windows Phone users a great way of communication via text or video messages with Skype. In order to do that, the application needs to be continuously improved with new features and enhancements.

Today’s update for Skype brings exactly that: a few new major features and some improvements meant to make user experience much smoother with the Windows Phone application.

First of all, Skype for Windows Phone has received “location sharing.” This new feature is available to all Windows Phone users and can be enabled by clicking the “+” icon in a chat and selecting “share location.”

Obviously, this will share your location with the people in your conversation. It’s a useful way to let your friends know where you are without having to type any messages. The “location sharing” feature should also be more precise than your explanations.

But this is not the only new feature included in the latest update for Skype. According to Microsoft, Skype users can now save a photo from within the application. In order to do that, simply tap the image to enlarge it, then tap for more menu options, and select the intuitive “save photo” option.

Update 2.22 for Skype is also supposed to enhance user control over notifications. Basically, Microsoft introduced notification controls for individual conversations.

You get more control over individual conversations as well

This was one of the most requested features by Windows Phone users, and it looks like the Skype team of engineers decided to put it inside this update.

How will it work though? Well, you can now tap in a chat and select “notifications” in order to get more options. There are several settings that you can choose from the contextual menu, such as the option to turn notifications for that particular conversation on or off.

That way, you will only be alerted about incoming messages when you want and if you want. You can control multiple conversations by enabling or disabling the notifications for each of them, so you will be notified on the ones you want.

Microsoft may have squeezed in some bug fixes and slight performance improvements, but there are no mentions of any of these in the official changelog.

Anyway, you can now download Skype for Windows Phone 2.22 for free via Windows Phone Store. The application should be fully compatible with all devices powered by Windows Phone 8 and up. Keep in mind that the new features included in this update will work on both Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1.
