Microsoft kicked off the rollout of the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 earlier this week, which contains lots of improvements and new features that enhance overall user performance.

Even though the Redmond-based company has already released the official changelog for this update for both end users and OEMs, there are still some under-the-hood improvements that have yet to be discovered by Windows Phone users.

One of these “hidden” new features have just been discovered by the folks over at UniverseoWindows and is related to the mobile version of Office included in Windows Phone.

For those unaware, Office Mobile can't open a password-protected Word document. However, with the latest Update 1 installed on the phone, you will now be able to read these documents.

The bad news is even if you can read password-protected Word documents now, you still can't edit them on the go. It's also worth mentioning that the version of Office Mobile enabling users to read password protected Word documents is only available on Windows Phone 8.1 with Update 1 installed.

Those who successfully captured Update 1 on their Windows Phone 8.1 smartphones can now test this new feature and see how it works for them.
