Redmond-based software giant Microsoft has announced on Wednesday the release of an updated version of its Bing app for Windows phones. The launch comes hot on the heels of the recently performed updates to the Bing search engine, as well as to the Bing Maps, which came with a series of improvements both for mobile phone users and for the users of a desktop computer.

The new Bing app for Windows Mobile has been designed so as to offer users the possibility to enjoy quick, on-the-go searches, all directly from their handsets, and tailored to fit the on-the-go needs. According to the bingteam, the new version of the application has been developed so as to include some features that will take the search “beyond the box.”

Among the new features that those who use Bing on their mobile phones will be able to enjoy, we can count:
- Type Less, search more: Typing can be tough on small devices. Now you can easily speak your search query into your phone and let Bing do the rest. We’ve really worked to improve the quality of recognition and level of understanding we have when you speak – I always use this first now.
- Map Your Way: Quickly access maps, driving directions and traffic information so you can find where you are and get where you are going. The new application also includes an improved auto-locate feature to show your current location.
- Act Locally: Wherever you are, Bing makes it easy to find a nearby business, a new restaurant, or even a local movie theatre with the latest show times. You can quickly and easily bookmark locations and businesses for later reference.
- Get Quick Answers: Make decisions fast and on the go with the top web results and instant answers for your pressing questions. Save favorites and recent searches to a list so that you don’t have to repeat searches.

The interface of Bing Mobile has been revamped, and now users can benefit from a series of touch-enhancements, although the app in itself is said to be a little slow. Overall, it will deliver a better user experience to anyone who tries it out. In case you haven't met Bing for mobile already, you can learn more about it here. Windows Mobile phone users can enjoy it by heading to m.bing.com on their handsets.

Version 4.6.6169.0 is much more useable than this junk that resembles a Beta 1 program.

If you have your phone in landscape mode and you're using map mode there are two huge windows that hide the map. When routing you will need to change each waypoint and your map location manually. In the older version, 4.6, the map scrolled with your location. The icon was an arrowhead. The new version has a useless dot that moves, but the map doesn't scroll. I was able to see how far I was to my next waypoint with the old version. Not so with the new version. The new version is useless for driving.

I tried to route to a location I've never been to. I spoke a location Embassy Suites Hilton at Seaside, CA and the old version found it without a problem. The new version didn't even know what I was trying to find.

The old version had icons for traffic, directions, traffic, movies, gas prices, etc. The new version...I have no idea since the text was hidden behind some useless mountain picture. It was so much harder to choose what menu item I wanted with text than with icons on my HTC Tilt 2.

Overall, if you still have the old .cab version available I'd say use that version. Don't upgrade.
