Considering the fierce competition between the two main manufacturers of gaming consoles, Sony and Microsoft, it's no surprise that each of them is trying to find new ways of making their products more popular.

The latest initiative in this direction belongs to Microsoft's Chairman, Bill Gates, who has suggested during his visit in Japan that Xbox's software could be the subject of a licensing
agreement, aimed at extending the gaming console's market share.

The American company could offer "the basic software" for Xbox, although it's not yet clear what kind of software might be involved or which Xbox we're talking about. Also, no specifics are given regarding what this software might be used for.

The arrangements being considered are similar to those that Microsoft has employed in the past by working with other companies, including Japanese electronics makers, to install its Windows operating system in personal computers, said Microsoft Japan spokesman Kazushi Okabe.

It's quite clear that these moves are a part of Microsoft's strategy for promoting the Xbox 360, scheduled to be released this winter. The company from Redmond hopes to gain a solid market share before the launch of PlayStation 3, and that is why it has been trying to appeal to Japanese consumers by attracting top Japanese designers to create games for Xbox 360.

But only the level of sales will determine whether Microsoft will be able to achieve a notable success on Sony's and Nintendo's home market, and we still have to wait one year before seeing the first solid proofs regarding the result of this race.
