The smartphones will be offered on a “first come, first served” basis

It looks like Microsoft’s plan to cut no less than 4,700 jobs at its Nokia handset factory and R&D center in Beijing got the Chinese government attention.

In an attempt to ease the tension between the Chinese government and all its businesses in the country, Microsoft has announced it will offer some compensation for those who voluntarily quit their jobs.

According to MarketWatch, Microsoft has decided to offer the Nokia Lumia 630 smartphone to those who willingly resign. The handset will be offered on a “first come, first served” basis, so there’s no telling how many units Microsoft is willing to give for free.

The Nokia Lumia 630 is now available for purchase in China at various authorized retailers for around 800 yuan outright, which is about $130 or €97.

If this turns out to be true, it’s a pathetic attempt and we doubt it will have any positive effects among Nokia’s employees. Last week’s protests against Microsoft’s massive layoffs seem to be the result of the company’s inability to find the correct compensation for those who are willing to voluntarily resign.

The Nokia Lumia 630 is a relatively new smartphone, but it’s aimed at the budget-friendly segment of the market, hence the obvious overall value.
