Windows 9 is clearly one of the most anticipated products ever released by Microsoft, and it’s no surprise that we come across quite a lot of rumors every new day.

One such rumor claims that Microsoft might drop the numbering naming scheme and go for something much simpler that would try to capitalize on the popularity of the Windows operating system, not only on the desktop, but also on tablets and smartphones.

Microsoft is expected to break the news on Windows 9 next week, during a press-only event, but a statement recently released by the company might actually unveil a little bit more than expected.

As we reported to you yesterday morning, the President of Microsoft France confirmed during a local event that the company was set to unveil Windows 9 very soon, more or less confirming that next week’s event would bring us the first beta of the upcoming operating system.

Microsoft’s gaffe could reveal the new Windows name

While the French Microsoft official didn’t provide too many details besides the planned Windows 9 unveiling as part of the September 30 event, a company spokesperson then submitted a statement to put things straight in this case.

“We look forward to seeing you in late September, in San Francisco, for the future of Windows, which actually at this stage does not have a name as such,” the company spokesperson was quoted as saying.

As you might have recently heard, people close to the matter claimed that Microsoft was at least considering dropping the naming numbering scheme for its operating system, so instead of Windows 9, the next OS could simply be called Windows.

Microsoft’s statement, however, does not confirm that Windows is the chosen name of the next release of the operating system, but instead comes to deny that Windows 9 could be used, which again leaves room for interpretation.

Testing builds are called Windows Technical Preview

Another sign that Windows 9 could launch as Windows is the name that the existing testing builds currently display in the watermark placed on the right bottom corner.

These builds are running what Microsoft calls Windows Technical Preview and not Windows 9 Technical Preview, so the final product might very well be called Windows.

Rumor has it that the same Windows designation could be used for phones and tablets as well, thus dumping the previous Windows RT and Windows Phone names for an approach that could attract more buyers thanks to the popularity of the desktop operating system.
