Recently, software giant Microsoft started to roll-out a new software update for devices running under its Windows Phone 7 operating system, and the company has just unveiled some new details on the update process.

The new software update comes with a wide range of improvements for Windows Phone 7-based handsets, including the highly expected copy&paste feature, and is already arriving on smartphones out there.

“This week we’re sending out the new update only to “open market” Windows Phones around the world. If you own one of these phones, you probably already know it: these are unbranded devices that aren’t customized for a specific mobile operator,” Eric Hautala, general manager, Customer Experience Engineering, Microsoft, notes in a recent blog post.

He also explains that a larger portion of Windows Phone 7 devices out there should start to receive the software update soon after that.

“In next phase of the rollout process, we’ll start making the update available to a broader range of customers. When the update is available for your phone, you’ll get a message on the device letting you know,” Eric Hautala continues.

Some of the newer devices would arrive on shelves with the update already installed on them. Users who would like to learn more on how to perform the update on their Windows Phone 7 handsets should read our previous post on the matter.

Microsoft is pushing the update in phases so as to make sure that things would go as planned and that no issues emerge with the delivery process.

The company also came up with a special web page, where users can check the status of the update for their specific devices, based on market, carrier, and the like. You can access the Where’s my phone update? page at Microsoft here.

On that page, users would see when the update is being tested and scheduled for roll-out for specific operator in a certain market. The website is being updated once a week, Hautala concludes.
