Redmond is working on a successor to the Surface Pro 3

Microsoft has already started work on the new Surface Pro 4 2-in-1 device, and although the company has tried to keep everything secret and avoid sharing any details regarding the project, we now have the first specifications of the model that could launch later this year.

Published by Chinese media, these specifications do make some sense, but keep in mind that there’s nothing confirmed so far, so don’t be too surprised if the Surface Pro 4 turns out to be different than what these details are revealing.

First and foremost, the Surface Pro 4 could use Intel’s 5th generation Broadwell and a fanless design that should make the device itself truly silent. This would be possible thanks to a new design of the metal case that would allow the processor to cool down whenever you run a process that’s more demanding.

Same screen size, other options considered

Interestingly, the Surface Pro 4 would have the exact same screen size as its predecessor, so a 12-inch display is very likely, despite some rumors claiming that an even bigger model would be planned.

In addition, Microsoft is reportedly working to make the Surface Pro 4 thinner than the Surface Pro 3, obviously thanks to the removal of the cooler, but the device will have the exact same weight as the old version. There’s a second option that Microsoft is considering and that includes a slimmer cooler, but a decision on this is yet to be made, the report says.

Needless to say, the Surface Pro 4 would come with Windows 10 from the very beginning and would feature a built-in kickstand, a removable keyboard, and support for a digital pen, just like the existing model does.

Pricing will continue to be very high because the Surface Pro 4 would still be a productivity workhorse, but specific details are not yet available. The launch could take place in the fall of 2015, after Windows 10 hits the shelves.
