Just as we told you not long ago, Microsoft is prepping a new member of the Surface family, one that would compete with the likes of iPad mini and Nexus 7 in the mini tablet department.

While the initial report indicated that Microsoft would go for a 7-inch device, it appears that the tech giant is actually working on a different unit, featuring an 8-inch screen.

According to a tweet from Microsoft watcher Paul Thurrott, who cites unnamed sources, Microsoft’s upcoming Surface Mini will pack an 8-inch display, but no other details have been provided.

It appears that the Surface Mini is projected to hit shelves later this year, most likely soon after the launch of Windows 8.1, expected to take place sometime this summer. Surface Mini could be Microsoft’s first tablet running the refreshed version of Windows 8.
