A new free resource from Microsoft is designed to streamline the migration of older Microsoft Surface applications to the next generation of Samsung SUR40 hardware.

Microsoft Surface 2.0 Migration Power Toy is not only offered free of charge, but is also an open source utility, which devs can not only use, but also tweak as they see fit.

Microsoft Surface Migration Power Toy went live on the Microsoft Download Center on July 11, 2011, accompanying the release of Microsoft Surface 2.0 SDK and Runtime.

Versions 2.0 of the software development kit for Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface can also be downloaded from the software giant as of today.

“Windows Presentation Framework 4.0 (WPF 4) has increased support for touch. Some of the new classes introduced in WPF 4 include TouchDevice and TouchPoint,” the Redmond company said.

“Also, the UIElement implementation in WPF4 now supports manipulations. The Microsoft Surface 2.0 SDK is consistent with the WPF 4 classes, so the Surface 2.0 APIs changed slightly from the Surface 1.0 APIs—primarily to keep consistent with WPF 4.”

The Microsoft Surface 2.0 SDK and Runtime can be used to create applications for Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface, as well as for Windows 7 though-enabled PCs. S

It’s important to note in this regard, that the Microsoft Surface Migration Power Toy is capable of helping developers adapt their Surface 1.0 SDK apps not only to Surface 2.0 but also to Windows 7 machines.

“Some Surface developers want to take the applications they created with the Surface 1.0 SDK (including SP1 and/or SE release) and modify them so that they can also run on Windows Touch-enabled PCs. This source project and document explains the process of porting an application, and exposes a tool that will help you in the porting process,” the Redmond company added.
