The company suspends the service due to new government policies

Microsoft has recently announced that as of July 1 it would no longer send email security notifications to users in order to comply with some new government policies supposed to block spam.

ZDNet is reporting today that the announcement was made today via the Microsoft Security Notifications email list, with the company mentioning “changing governmental policies concerning the issuance of automatic electronic messaging” as the main reason for this decision.

Email notifications have been used for a number of advisories, including security bulletin advance notifications sent before every Patch Tuesday, security bulletin summaries launched on Patch Tuesday, new security advisories and bulletins, and revisions made to security advisories and bulletins.

It appears that the government policy change that Microsoft is talking about took place in Canada, so it's not yet clear whether the Microsoft is making this modification for all users worldwide or only in this country.

Instead of staying up to date with security information via email, Microsoft is recommending users to subscribe to the other channels currently offered, including RSS feeds which are also updated with every occasion.

We've asked Microsoft for some clarification on this and we’ll update the article accordingly when and if we receive an answer.
