This is part of the 18,000 job cuts announced last year

Microsoft completed the takeover of Nokia's Devices and Services unit last year, and at that time, the company's CEO Satya Nadella announced a shocking 18,000 job cuts that would take place within the next 12 months in pretty much every department of the software giant and the newly purchased division.

Now it appears that the company is looking to finalize the layoff plan in the said timeframe, with another round of cuts having quietly taken place this week.

A report from GeekWire claims that hundreds of workers were fired this week as part of what appears the last round of layoffs that Microsoft needs to do after the Nokia takeover.

Details and figures are not available right now, but it appears that Microsoft's IT department is the one that was hit the hardest by the new job cut, and a company spokesperson has reportedly confirmed this, adding that a number of employees were working at the Redmond headquarters.

12,500 Nokia employees fired

The biggest job cut in Microsoft's history was announced on July 17, with the company revealing at that time that approximately 12,500 Nokia employees would be let go as part of the reorganization taking place after the acquisition.

Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella himself sent a memo to all employees to explain the decision, adding that each fired worker would receive severance packages and assistance.

“We will offer severance to all employees impacted by these changes, as well as job transition help in many locations, and everyone can expect to be treated with the respect they deserve for their contributions to this company,” he said at that point.

This week's job cut appears to be the final round of layoffs, as Microsoft has a deadline of June 30 to complete the reorganization, but an official announcement on this is yet to be provided.

We've also contacted the company for more information on what exactly happened this week and which are the divisions impacted by the layoff, so we'll update the article when we receive an answer.
