When Microsoft says it is interested in a certain technology, it usually starts buying out companies, mostly market leaders on that specific area. This time it's all about voice over IP telephony and the newest asset acquired by Microsoft is called media-streams.com.

This is a privately held
company from Zurich, Switzerland, which develops technology to route and manage phone calls over the Internet. Microsoft plans to integrate technology produced by media-streams.com in the Office products, so that users will be able to add incoming phone calls to conferences, route calls and host teleconferences between people in different locations.

According to Microsoft representatives, integrating voice communications with applications in Microsoft Office will enable users to have new communication possibilities, optimizing individual but also group performances.

The Swiss company has already developed voice over IP (VoIP) software compatible with a Microsoft product, Outlook Express to be exact.
