Alan Mulally, one of the leading candidates for the Microsoft CEO position, won’t leave the American carmaker until late 2014, according to a company official.

This statement made Microsoft share fall 3 percent, which is a bit surprising given the fact that Mulally has been basically saying the same thing over and over again for several months now.

Alan Mulally is considered a leading candidate for the CEO position, along with some other Microsoft internals, including Satya Nadella, Kevin Turner, and Tony Bates. Former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, who will join Microsoft as part of the acquisition of the mobile phone maker, is also said to be among the front-runners for the job.

Microsoft hasn’t released too many comments since the CEO search officially started, but according to people familiar with the matter, a public announcement on who’s going to take over from Ballmer is expected by year-end.
