The number of Windows Phone 7 devices that have been sold during the five months that passed since the official release of the mobile operating system in October last year is reportedly nearing the 3.5 million mark.

While Microsoft did not offer specific info on the matter, enthusiasts managed to come up with this number using an algorithm previously used for predicting the first two million Windows Phone 7 devices sold around the world.

According to their report, Microsoft managed to sell over 3.38 million Windows Phone handsets since the official release of the platform.

Their prediction is based on the number of active users that the Windows Phone 7 Facebook application is showing, which was of over 500,000 a few days ago, the number of days that passed since Microsoft announced the last sales figure, and other numbers as well.

According to them, a number of over 877,000 Windows Phone 7 smartphones were sold during February alone, which is pretty good in the current market conditions.

The mobile platform enjoys increased support from software developers around the world, with over 32,000 of them registering to come up with apps for the OS, and with over 10k applications already included in the Windows Phone Marketplace.

The appeal of the platform would certainly increase as Microsoft delivers the first updates for it, which should bring some new, highly appreciated features into the mix.

The company has pushed back the release of the first major update for the OS, called NoDo, which should bring copy/paste features into the mix, though it should make it available for download before the end of the month.

As stated above, Microsoft has yet to provide some info on the sales of Windows Phone 7, but, based on what the company said before, we would expect for it to confirm the aforementioned numbers. Stay tuned for updates on this.
