At just a month since the previous update shipped to Microsoft Security Essentials 2.1, a new refresh is now available. As I told you earlier this week, the Redmond company was planning to update MSE with a new AntiMalware engine release.

The software giant certainly managed to live up to its promise, and Microsoft Security Essentials 2.1 customers are able to start leveraging the updated antimalware engine as of July 20, 2011.

As was the case with previous such updates, MSE wasn’t the only security solution from Microsoft refreshed.

I already told Softpedia readers that the software giant uses the same antimalware technology to power a variety of products, including Microsoft Security Essentials.

“Antimalware Engine 1.1.7104.0 is released to all Microsoft Security Essentials and Forefront Client Security, Forefront Endpoint Protection, Windows Intune Endpoint Protection customers on 20 July 2011. Signature package 1.109.37.0 is the first that contains this engine,” Microsoft said.

As already noted, the refresh is nothing more than a regular update of the Redmond company’s antimalware technology.

With the threat landscape evolving continually, Microsoft is simply keeping up by updating the antimalware engine which powers MSE, FCS, FEP, and Windows Intune Endpoint Protection.

Customers running the security products mentioned above will most likely receive a new antimalware engine update next month.

Microsoft Security Essentials 2.1.1116.0 went live recently and is currently available for download from the software giant, free of charge as all previous releases of MSE.

AV-Test released the results of its latest security benchmarks involving a total of 22 products running on Windows XP SP3 and tested in the second quarter of 2011. Only 16 AV passed the tests, Microsoft Security Essentials among them.

According to AV-Test, Microsoft still has to work on improving MSE when it comes down to fighting zero-day threats.
