The company provides more stats on its phone business

Windows Phone continues to be far behind rivals iOS and Android in terms of market share, but a new bunch of statistics provided by Microsoft come to actually indicate that its very own smartphone platform is selling decently well and improved figures should be reached soon.

At a recent event in Germany, Microsoft revealed that users purchased and activated approximately 50 million Lumia devices, and while these figures do not tell us too many things about the market performance of Windows Phone, they do serve as an indication that adoption is growing for the Redmond-based giant’s smartphone platform.

As WMPowerUser reports, Microsoft also said that there are 560,000 Windows Phone developers, but surprisingly, there are only 320,000 apps in the Windows Phone Store. That’s a bit uncanny to say the least, but the good thing is that the store experienced an increase of 30,000 apps from the 300,000 figure reached in August.

Nokia brand no more

Microsoft is really serious about the mobile business and has recently decided to drop the Nokia brand and create its own called Microsoft Lumia and already used for the Lumia 535, an affordable device launched earlier this year.

Obviously, Microsoft wants its Lumia device lineup to be significantly revamped in the coming months, so expect more phones wearing the company’s logos to see daylight very soon.

People close to the matter have indicated that more Windows Phone devices are in the works right now, including a 5-inch handset whose screen got leaked in China a couple of days ago.

Windows Phone 10 also in the works

Concomitantly with the development of new Windows Phone devices, Microsoft is also working on Windows Phone 10, the next version of its smartphone operating system that’s expected to come together with the desktop Windows in spring 2015.

Not much is known at this point, but sources familiar with the development plans earlier this year hinted that a preview build could be unveiled in early 2015 for developers and experienced users who agree to help the company improve the operating system.

What’s more, it might appear that Microsoft works to merge Windows Phone with Windows RT and create a single platform powering both phones and tablets.

Obviously, pretty big changes are in the pipeline for Windows Phone users, so expect early 2015 to be a really busy time for many Microsoft customers. We’ve also reached out to Microsoft for more stats on Windows Phone adoption and will update the article when we get an answer.
