Partition stitching has been added successfully

Many of you probably know by now that Microsoft plans to expand Windows 10 for Phones Technical Preview to additional smartphones with the next build.

The reason that wasn't possible until now was the fact that they needed to add a feature called “partition stitching,” which would allow Microsoft to re-size the system partition dynamically.

This would have allowed Microsoft with the option to do the Windows 10 upgrade on a higher number of smartphones.

The good news is the Redmond-based company has managed to implement this feature into Windows 10 for Phones Technical Preview and the next build should bring support for more smartphones.

The full list of compatible smartphones does not include the Lumia 930, but it's not 100% locked, so we might see some devices being pulled from the list or others being added.

That being said, you might be wondering when the next Windows 10 for Phones Technical Preview is supposed to be released.

We reported several days ago that it might arrive this week, as Gabriel Aul pointed out, but it now looks like Microsoft needs extra time to test it.

The next build should arrive in the second week of April

According to him, “We still have some work to do to validate individual phones, as well as the builds that we’re flighting through our internal rings. As I said in the post on frequency I cannot guarantee a date for a new build.

“What I CAN tell you is that we feel great here about the partition stitching code and current builds, but we likely still have at least one more week of engineering to do to ensure we get a great build for the expanded list of devices.”

So, if nothing goes wrong, we might see the next Windows 10 for Phones Technical Preview build being released during the second week of April.

This means that even if Microsoft finds a device specific bug, they would rather pull that device from the list of supported devices than delay the next build. Stay tuned for more on this one.
