The team needed to make some gameplay-related sacrifices

Mike Ybarra, the leader of the Microsoft Studios, says that his company expected fans to be disappointed with the launch of the Crytek-made Ryse: Son of Rome because the title was mainly created in order to show off the graphics that the Xbox One could deliver.

The executive tells MyXboxLive that, “I think the point that gets lost a lot is that it’s all a game of trade-offs. Resolution alone is not the final determination regarding if a game looks great or not, it’s one of many different levers and it’s up to the game teams to decide what is best for their unique game experience.”

The amount of resources that were used to create the graphics side of Ryse: Son of Rome means that Crytek was unable to deliver the most complex gameplay.

This means that when the game was finally launched, plenty of players were disappointed with the limited gameplay and with the rather restrictive level design.

Ybarra adds, “If you look on Amazon, we are rated 4 out of 5 stars by direct consumers. While there were certainly things we wished we could have gotten in the game and we understand the key criticism, we are proud of Ryse and think it is a fun experience for our audience.”

It’s unclear whether Crytek has any plans to make Ryse a long-term franchise or whether the game will suffer the fate of other launch titles and fade from view as better games for the Xbox One are released.

The company is currently developing better graphics tools, but it seems to have no plans to bring any of its big franchises to the Xbox One or the PlayStation 4.

Crytek is currently working on Warface, which is now offered on the PC and might come to next-gen consoles using a free-to-play model.
