Microsoft has just released another major Windows 8 app update, bringing plenty of new features to the built-in Modern apps, including Mail, Calendar, and People.

Sources familiar with the matter hinted one month ago that this could be another way to prepare Windows 8 for the debut of Blue, the first important update of the current operating system that’s expected to see daylight in August.

The Mail app is dubbed the most popular Windows 8 Modern app, so it has received lots of improvements, including options to help users create and manage email folders straight from its UI. In addition, the app now packs features to see only unread messages and flag those considered important, just like in any other full-featured email client out there.

“Flagged emails will show in your inbox (or any other folder in the account) and in a ‘Flagged’ folder within the Mail app so you can see all flagged email messages,” Microsoft explained.

What’s more, sending new emails has also been enhanced with options to add, edit and delete hyperlinks, edit bulleted or numbered lists and search for messages with ease.

As for the Calendar app, Microsoft rolled out a completely new design, as well as new settings that are supposed to make all available features a bit easier to use.

“Visually, the Calendar app has been updated to make looking at your calendars easier to read. Gone are the solid blocks of colors – instead, those colors are reflected in a small bar on the left of each appointment,” the company added.

“The Calendar app now accommodates the use of scheduling assistant for business accounts that use Microsoft Exchange. Anyone used to scheduling meetings in Microsoft Outlook and being able to see a person’s availability will be able to see the same thing in the Calendar app.”

If you’re using the People app on a daily basis, you should be delighted to find out that Microsoft has introduced a new navigation bar plus a feed option to control some of your social networking accounts.

All these updates are distributed via the integrated Windows Store, so you have nothing more to do than to launch it and check out the dedicated “Updates” section at the top of the screen.
