In between Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 rollouts and work on Windows 10 Mobile Technical Previews, Microsoft has found the time to address a serious issue that would cause Lumia 930 smartphones to periodically reboot themselves in certain circumstances.

It's unclear if this is a widespread issue or not, but if Microsoft decided that it needed to be fixed, then it means it's pretty important.

According to WindowsCentral, in some cases, the Lumia 930 might restart itself when browsing the gallery, but this is not the only scenario in which the smartphone reboots spontaneously.

The update is now pushed OTA (over the air) in stages to all Lumia 930 devices. The changelog confirms that this is an important update designed to fix a critical issue that may cause the device to periodically reboot.

This isn't the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2

Microsoft informed Lumia owners about the rollout of the update on its support forum, but did not offer too many details on the matter:

“If you get a critical or important update notification on your phone, we're letting you know that there's an important update that will fix a particular problem. We recommend that you install any critical updates immediately. We identified a problem in some versions of Windows Phone 8.1 that could cause a phone to restart periodically. A critical update will fix this problem,” the company says.

Keep in mind that after you successfully capture and install the update, your OS version should be 8.10.14226.359, while the firmware revision number should read 02540.00019.14522.26006.

Since this is a critical update and Microsoft strongly recommends to download and install it, Lumia 930 owners should check for it via Settings / Phone updates, if they haven't been notified on its availability yet.

There are no other changes included in the update except for the fix for the random reboot issue, so don't look for any new features and improvements after upgrading.
