Microsoft is working to ship a new Windows 10 for phones preview build sometime very soon, and the company is offering new details on the devices that will be supported in this release.

Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, already confirmed one week ago that Lumia 930, the 5-inch flagship, would finally get support for Windows 10 in the next update, but now he comes back to say that the 640 XL will be included as well.

Basically, if you’ve recently purchased the 640 XL, which was launched by Microsoft in early March, you can move from Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10 when the new build becomes available, but keep in mind that Redmond recommends you to stay away from these releases unless you’re ready to come across bugs and issues that could make the phone unusable.

The Lumia 930 saga

The biggest news, however, is that Lumia 930 will finally get support for Windows 10, after more than 3 months of waiting.

The very first preview of Windows 10 for phones was launched on February 12 for only six models, and because of a partition stitching problem, Microsoft did not allow owners of flagships, including the 930 and the 1520 models, to deploy the preview build.

The second update delivered last month brought support for Lumia 1520, but once again, 930 users had no other option than to continue using Windows Phone 8.1 on their devices. This time, Microsoft promises to add support for 930 in the upcoming build, but additional work is still needed, which obviously takes a little bit more time.

As far as the release date of the new build is concerned, we expect it to go live sometime in the next two weeks, but Microsoft avoids offering any specifics because the release could be pushed back in case it comes across major bugs that might need additional work.
