There are lots of new features and improvements that Nokia Lumia owners will benefit from once their smartphones receive the upcoming Lumia Cyan update.

Some of these improvements have already been confirmed, but for the most part, Microsoft has yet to detail all the features that Nokia Lumia devices will receive once the Cyan update gets released.

Thankfully, ex-Nokia imaging technology gurus Juha Alakarhu and Eero Salmelin, now with Microsoft, were kind enough to answer a few questions during an AMA session, regarding the upcoming changes that some Lumia phone would receive with the Cyan update.

According to Juha Alakarhu, the following improvements will be available for Nokia Lumia 1520, Lumia 930 and Icon, once the Cyan update hits these devices:

“- much better low light performance - better colors - continuous autofocus - better video quality - and even the RAW images will look better because we are using the sensor in more clever way.”

But that is not all, as Juha Alakarhu has confirmed that the Creative Studio application has been completely revamped and it’s been updated with new filters, as well as non-destructive editing.

Moreover, the popular Nokia Camera has been improved as well, according to Alakarhu, so Lumia owners should expect it to be a bit faster and to feature a better camera roll.

Another improvement that Lumia smartphone users should expect is much better shot to shot time on the large 20MP+ sensors. Eero Salmelin claims that the feature has been improved in the new camera application that will be part of the Cyan update.

The Cyan update will also bring Living Images to Nokia Lumia 1520, Lumia 930 and Icon smartphones. For those who wish they could save their pictures as GIFs, here is some exciting news.

The new Storyteller application included in the Cyan update has a special feature called Story sharing, which allows users to share the Living Images as videos.

These are not the only improvements that the Cyan update will bring, but more details are likely to be offered by Microsoft in the coming months, so if you own a Lumia smartphone, you should stay tuned for more on this one.

Nokia Lumia Cyan update is expected to arrive soon after Microsoft releases Windows Phone 8.1 for the general public and, as the name suggests, it will be exclusive to Lumia smartphones.

Even though there’s no confirmed date for the launch of the latter, everything indicates that Microsoft should kick off the rollout of Windows Phone 8.1 update by the end of the month.
