A new application is now available for download from Microsoft Research, destined to offer the possibility to combine still images with videos.

Released free of charge, the new Microsoft Research Cliplets 1.0.1 application can be downloaded and installed on PCs running either 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Windows 7.

Through this simple application, people can put together photos and videos to create content in which the focus remains on what was intended to be captured in the first place.

Basically, through pairing the two, one will manage to eliminate all the irrelevant background clutter from a video and replace it with a still image.

“A still photograph is a limited format for capturing a moment in time,” the app’s description on Microsoft Research notes.

“Video is the traditional method for recording durations of time, but the subjective "moment" that one desires to capture is often lost in the chaos of shaky camerawork, irrelevant background clutter, and noise that dominates most casually recorded video clips.”

The application takes advantage of semi-automated methods to provide users with the option to create “Cliplets.”

This kind of imagery includes elements from both still images and from videos shot with any handheld device.

Moreover, the Microsoft Research Cliplets application was packed with a creative lens that can be used to focus on the aspects of the video that you want to, through simply putting together static and dynamic elements from a video clip.

“Microsoft Research Cliplets is provided free of charge and without official support. However, if you have questions or issues, you may find help at the Cliplets Forum, which is monitored by the developers and provides community-based support,” Microsoft Research explains.

At the same time, those who would like to learn more on how the new application works can head over to the Microsoft Research website to have a look at the available Tutorials there.
