Bad news for Windows Phone users, as new info on the release of the next major update for Microsoft's mobile operating system has just emerged and things are not looking as good as we originally thought.

WMPoweruser reports the folks over at WPBar, a reliable source of leaks regarding Windows Phone, claim Microsoft plans to release the Windows Phone 8.1 upgrade for general public around June / August.

While the update will be officially announced in early April, Windows Phone users will not be able to upgrade to 8.1 for at least another two months.

Although “Developer” Preview will be available for download earlier than June, which means developers who own an App Studio account will be able to upgrade with Windows Phone 8.1 from April.

It's unclear why it will take Microsoft so long to offer the upgrade to Windows Phone 8.1 from the moment of its reveal in early April, but we suspect it's the complexity and the size of the update that may have influenced the Redmond-based company in taking this decision.

Another bad news would be the fact that those who own carrier-branded smartphones eligible for a Windows Phone 8.1 upgrade will have to wait even longer to receive the update.

Many carriers are known taking their times testing these major updates, so instead of receiving the upgrade in June / August, some users may not get to Windows Phone 8.1 until September / November.

This usually happens with Android updates as well, but Apple has learned to avoid the issue by releasing important updates around the same time they get announced for everyone.

Hopefully, the folks over at WPBar are mistaken and Microsoft will be able to offer the highly anticipated Windows Phone 8.1 updates earlier than expected. Stay tuned for more info on the matter.
