New flavors of the recently-released SkyDrive applications for Windows and Mac computers are now available for download.

Microsoft is delivering these updates to make sure that issues that might have affected the user experience with the software have been resolved, and to add a new set of features.

In a recent post on the SkyDrive blog, Mike Torres, group program manager, SkyDrive Apps, provides a series of details on the new release.

According to him, those who have SkyDrive installed on their Windows PC or on Macs running OS X Lion will receive the update automatically, without having to perform additional actions for that. The update will be delivered to all users within the next few weeks, he also notes.

Shortly, Microsoft should release its Windows 8 Release Preview platform version, and new features are available for SkyDrive users in it.

“Right from the Photos app in Windows 8, you can fetch photos stored on your other PCs that have SkyDrive installed – no matter where you are or how many terabytes of photos you have stored on the PC you are accessing,” Torres explains.

After applying the new app flavor, the SkyDrive folder updates faster and more reliably than before, while the limit of total files in the SkyDrive folder that the software has created has been increased to 10 million.

In addition, a wide range of enhancements arrived to improve the overall performance of the app, and Mac users will no longer see an app icon in the dock when SkyDrive is running.

Users can check to see whether they are indeed running the latest flavor of the app, through heading to Settings (right-click on the SkyDrive system tray icon in Windows, the application menu on Mac). The latest build is 16.4.4111.0525.

Apparently, ever since releasing the desktop applications for SkyDrive users, the service has registered an increase in usage, Torres states.

“In just a few weeks, more people were using SkyDrive apps than have used Mesh. People using SkyDrive for Windows or Mac are now our most engaged users – syncing files across several devices, sharing with SkyDrive.com, and working together with Office Web Apps,” he notes.
