Three weeks after releasing the redesigned 7.0 version, Microsoft is now offering an updated build of the Mac Skype client with full support for Apple’s new desktop OS, Yosemite.

In addition to support for OS X 10.10, Skype 7.1 further enhances group profile, making it easier to copy a link or to leave a group conversation. But let’s see what Skype 7 has in store for everyone, including for people who haven’t yet made the upgrade.

Skype’s latest enhancements

Users who haven’t yet installed Skype 7 at all are in for a nice surprise. The app’s chat and calling components have undergone a redesign, file transfer has been updated, large emoticons are now supported, Favorites conversations now “roam” and sync on supported platforms, and now there’s support for limited instant message formatting.

Starting with version 7, Skype is now a 64-bit application. Microsoft has fixed post-call crashes, login crashes that could happen on Retina display MacBooks with an external screen, crashes when closing a window that was being shared, and an issue where sidebar pictures would sometimes fail to load. Finally, version 7 also makes it possible to easily change the group chat picture.

Skype 7.1 and support for OS X 10.10

The new Skype 7.1 is less exciting in terms of new features and enhancements, but it does add support for the latest and greatest Mac OS. According to Tom Huang writing over at the Skype Garage Blog, “Today we’re releasing Skype 7.1 for Mac, which now supports OS X 10.10 Yosemite.”

In usual manner, the Skype team goes to mention “the full list of features and fixes,” which includes “enhanced group profile- making it easier to copy a link or to leave a group conversation,” according to the post.

Fixed bugs include a crash on video calls on Yosemite and crashes when sending contacts from search results. There are some lingering known issues as well. For instance, users will not be able to initiate calls from phone number buttons in contact profiles. The workaround is to “make calls using the voice call button,” according to Huang.

Another flaw is described as follows: “When opening a conversation that has a contact sent to it and then sign out, the client stalls and is non-responsive.” This bug also has a workaround: “Switch to a different conversation and then sign out.” Download Skype 7.1 on your Yosemite Mac and enjoy these new perks today.
