Outlook.com, the “reinvented” email platform belonging to the Redmond-based technology giant, has embraced a new ad format released by Microsoft that seems to be based on the Modern live tile design implemented into Windows 8.

Called versaTiles, the new advertising format is currently sold in Brazil in the United States, while Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, and the UK will get it very soon.

Basically, versaTiles provides three different modes, as it follows: the default one that’s displayed whenever you login to Outlook.com, the hover state when you move the mouse cursor over the tiles to get more information and images, and the click state that displays the ad content.

“versaTiles also provide a valuable surface area for advertisers to deliver relevant content in scenarios where people expect and look for commercial content. Currently, versaTiles offers advertisers three customizable templates to choose from to help tailor ads to meet specific campaign objectives,” Microsoft explained.
