If there's one thing that people really like about Microsoft's Bing search engine, it's the homepage image that's automatically changed every day and allows users to discover some beautiful places across the world without moving a finger.

Homepage images are also available as part of Bing Desktop, a downloadable application that gives consumers the option to set these pictures as their desktop wallpapers and automatically change them every day as Microsoft releases new ones.

The software giant recently released an important update for Bing Desktop, which allows users to set the frequency of the updates they receive, but also the wallpaper categories they'd like to get on their desktops.

“To that end this week, we rolled out an update that makes it easier to customize and share your favorite homepage images. Now instead of having your wallpaper automatically synched to the Bing homepage-of-the-day, you have the option to set the categories you want to synch and the frequency with which they change,” Microsoft explained in a blog post.

At the same time, the company also improved the social features of the app in order to share the wallpapers you like the most with friends on Facebook and Twitter.

“Also, if you see a homepage image that you love now, with a simple click you can share it with your friends on Facebook or Twitter. Existing users will get the changes via Microsoft Update (if they have updates enabled),” the company added.

At this point, the update isn't yet available as a separate download and the only way to get it is via Windows Update, in case you have already installed a previous version. Bing Desktop continues to work flawlessly on all Windows versions on the market, including XP, which no longer receives updates and security patches from the software giant.

According to Microsoft, more than 10 million users have already installed Bing Desktop on their computers, which is actually one of the reasons why the company is working so hard to improve it. Of course, it's offered free of charge and, in addition to the wallpaper features, it also brings some other options that allow users to quickly search the Internet with Bing from their desktops.

Overall, this is clearly an update that comes in handy to those who are already using Bing Desktop, but in case you're not seeing the new version in Windows Update right now, just wait for a few more days and check again.
