Skype users with iPhones have a new update to download and install today, featuring an improved dialer interface, new chat-picking abilities, and general improvements. The iPad build remains untouched for now.

Officially announced by Lara Kingwell over at the Skype blog, Skype 5.9 for iPhone adds two major enhancements, and miscellaneous tweaks across the board.

Improved dial pad and chat picker

“Today we’re releasing Skype 5.9 for iPhone, which brings UI improvements to both the dial pad and new chat picker so you can start chatting with your friends and family more quickly and easily than ever,” writes Kingwell.

In Skype 5.9, you can get suggestions for contacts with matching numbers when you start typing a phone number in the dial pad, and you can quickly call people and groups right from the new chat picker. All you need to do is tap the chat icon and choose your contact.

The release notes posted over at the iTunes App Store also mention some general improvements, with no specifics regarding the squashed bugs (if any).

Microsoft wants testers

The announcement also includes an encouragement to join what appears to be a beta testing program where Microsoft hands you over unreleased builds with new features that you get to take for a spin and then provide feedback.

If you’re interested, you’ll need to be at least 18 years old, have a valid email address and Skype account or Microsoft Account, and agree to some terms and conditions. The iOS Ideas group in the Skype Community also awaits Skype enthusiasts who wish to share their ideas for upcoming features and changes. Download Skype for iPhone 5.9 and check it out today.
