Good news for Windows Phone users who installed a Developer Preview build on their Nokia smartphones, as Microsoft has just confirmed it has started the rollout of the Lumia Cyan update for some of these devices.

Lumia Cyan is already available for download for quite some time now, but only for those who did not enroll in the Preview for Developers program.

The reason why Lumia Cyan is not yet available for devices powered by Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview is a critical issue that does not allow users to install the update.

A small percentage of Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview users are met with the blue BitLocker recovery screen, which asks them to connect to a PC.

The bad news is that there’s no way to get past this blue screen, hence the Lumia Cyan update can’t be installed on certain devices that run Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview.

Microsoft acknowledged the issue some time ago, but has yet to fix it. Until then, the company halted the rollout of the Lumia Cyan update for all Nokia smartphones running Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview.

The BitLocker issue prevents Microsoft from rolling out Lumia Cyan to more devices

That’s a pretty odd decision considering that a very small percentage of Windows Phone users are affected by this issue. Basically, less than 5% of Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview users can’t install Lumia Cyan, which means Microsoft is holding back the update for more than 95% of them.

BitLocker offers an extra layer of security that’s enabled through various corporate device policies, which is why the problem should not affect regular Windows Phone users.

Anyway, it looks like Microsoft has decided to kick off the rollout of the Lumia Cyan update to more devices powered by Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview this week. Here is how a Microsoft official explains the rollout of the Lumia Cyan update:

“So, first things first: today we're releasing the Lumia Cyan update for another chunk of Preview for Developer devices. We'll be closely monitoring the success of this update on those phones.

“So, let us know if you are offered the update and if you have any issues! If all goes well, expect broader communication for the availability of even more phones (lots more!) over the next few days.”

Sadly, no details on what Nokia smartphones with Developer Preview builds will receive the Lumia Cyan update beginning today, but we hope Microsoft will offer more info on the matter soon, so stay tuned.
