Great news for Windows Phone fans, as Microsoft has just announced that the first update for the newly launched Windows Phone 8.1 operating system is now available for download.

Unveiled in early April during Microsoft's BUILD 2014 developer conference, Windows Phone 8.1 was released for a more or less limited number of users less than two weeks after its official announcement.

Dubbed Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview, this build is aimed at those who wish to make their apps compatible with their new operating system or create new ones.

Only users who own an App Studio account can download this Developer Preview build, but it's very easy to register for an account, so basically all those who wanted to test some of the new features included in Windows Phone 8.1 were able to do so.

Even though Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview brought major improvements and a plethora of new features, early adopters have found that some applications did not work as intended, while others were not yet available for this platform.

Some of Microsoft's own apps and services like Xbox Music and Game are a pain to use and Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview early adopters may want to refrain from opening any of them until they are fixed.

Well, it appears that at least some of the bugs that inadvertently made their way into the first Windows Phone 8.1 built are addressed as we speak.

The information has been confirmed by Microsoft's Joe Belfiore, who has said that the first update for Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview is now available for download.

If the update has failed to show on your phone until now, you might want to head over to Settings / Phone update / Check update, and hopefully, you will be able to download it.

According to Belfiore, the first Windows Phone 8.1 update is meant to crush some of the bugs found by Microsoft's engineers and early adopters.

Aside from that, Microsoft's official has confirmed that the update also brings some much needed battery improvements, which allows users to take advantage of the smartphone's capabilities for a much longer time.

Keep in mind that if you still don't see the update showing on your phone after manually checking for it, you should check the Preview for Developer app's status.

Make sure it's enabled once again, so you can download the first Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview, which will bump the OS to version 8.10.12382.878.
