I’m sure that at least for some IT admins the title of this article sounds a bit off, but fact is that Microsoft has just announced the release of AVIcode 5.7. Softpedia readers already know that AVIcode, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Redmond company as of October 2010, and for those, the fact that the software giant is releasing AVIcode 5.7 might not be a surprise at all.

A trial version of AVIcode 5.7 can already be downloaded from the Redmond company.

According to Microsoft, the AVIcode 5.7 evaluation copy is designed to offer customers full functionality until June 13, 2011. The promise from the company is that once the eval release expires, a new trial download will be made available to customers.

Obviously, AVIcode 5.7 needs to be used in concert with Microsoft’s System Center.

“Evaluation software -- as well as information on how existing AVIcode customers and SMSE / SMSD customers can gain access to the software – can be found on the NEW AVIcode product page at www.microsoft.com/AVIcode,” revealed Jason Buffington, Senior Technical Product Manager – System Center.

In fact, following the acquisition, the company plans to integrate AVIcode technologies closely into System Center products.

“AVIcode is available exclusively in connection with the purchase of System Center Server Management Suite Enterprise (SMSE), System Center Server Management Suite Datacenter (SMSD), Core Infrastructure Server (CIS) Suite Enterprise, or Core Infrastructure Server (CIS) Suite Datacenter.

“Any SMSE, SMSD, CIS Suite Enterprise, or CIS Suite Datacenter customer with active Software Assurance on or between October 5th, 2010 and October 30, 2012 is being offered AVIcode software from Microsoft’s AVIcode subsidiary at no additional charge,” Buffington explained.

Existing AVIcode customers are also permitted access to version 5.7. However, customers that bought AVIcode ahead of Microsoft’s acquisition should be aware that the licensing terms have changed, and need to review the new license before starting to leverage the new release.
