Redmond continues work on the new operating system

Microsoft is set to unveil a brand new Windows 10 Technical Preview build later today, along with a testing version of Windows Phone 10, and as the company goes forward towards a new important release, it has also reached a historical milestone for its own operating system.

Today, Microsoft has compiled the 10,000th Windows build, but although the number seems to match Microsoft’s planned Windows 10 release, it’s not expected to have any impact on its Insider program that will see a new TP build going out in the next couple of weeks.

This historical milestone has been reached today, so it’s very unlikely to see Microsoft rolling out such a fresh build that could contain bugs or other issues as part of its Windows Insider Program.

Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider Program, has confirmed in a short tweet that this is a risk that his company wouldn’t want to take, so an earlier build is most likely to be shipped to users.

Windows 10 plans to be detailed later today

And yet, since Windows 10 development advances at such a fast pace, it’s pretty clear that the final version of the operating system will have a 10.x version number. The latest build compiled until now is 9925, and given the fact that Windows 10 is expected to see daylight in the fall of 2015, such a version change is very likely.

Microsoft will, however, detail all its plans for Windows 10 during a press event later today, and the company is also expected to present new consumer-oriented features such as Cortana and Continuum, both of which were previously unavailable in Technical Preview builds.

Cortana was already implemented in the leaked 9901 build, but its public appearance would only take place today, sources say. Continuum, on the other hand, was first demoed in September, when Microsoft officially presented the first build of Windows 10, and it is likely to show up for the first time in the next Technical Preview build.

As far as the release of a new build is concerned, expect it to happen by the end of the month. While Microsoft will indeed demo a fresh version at today’s show, no release would take place in the next hours.
