Microsoft has quietly rolled out a CPU upgrade for the Surface Pro 2, with a new report claiming that the company is shipping tablets boasting 1.9 GHz processors instead of the stock 1.6 GHz Intel i5 CPU.

According to The Verge, Redmond already confirmed the move, but refused to provide any specifics regarding the reasons behind the hardware upgrade.

“Microsoft routinely makes small changes to internal components over the lifetime of a product, based on numerous factors including supply chain partnerships, availability, and value for our customers,” a Microsoft spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“With any change to hardware or software, we work to ensure that the product experience remains excellent.”

The two Intel processors are very similar, and the only noticeable difference between the 4200U and 4300U units is the relatively slight speed increase that’s expected to lead to enhanced performance and a somewhat longer battery life.

According to the same report, the hardware upgrade took place in December and there are no details as to whether the RT model could get any spec improvements as well or not.
